Floating Offshore Vertical Axis Wind Turbines: Opportunities, Challenges and Way Forward

نویسندگان

چکیده

The offshore wind sector is expanding to deep water locations through floating platforms. This poses challenges horizontal axis turbines (HAWTs) due the ever growing size of blades and support structures. As such, maintaining structural integrity reducing levelised cost energy (LCoE) HAWTs seems increasingly difficult. An alternative these could be found in vertical (VAWTs). It known that VAWTs have certain advantages over HAWTs, fact, some small-scale developers successfully commercialised their onshore prototypes. In contrast, it remains unknown whether can offer an advantage for farms. Therefore, here we present a multi-criteria review different aspects address this question. farm power density reliability decisive factors make feasible arrays. Finally, propose way forward based on findings review.

A comparison between the dynamics of horizontal and vertical axis offshore floating wind turbines.

The need to further exploit offshore wind resources in deeper waters has led to a re-emerging interest in vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) for floating foundation applications. However, there has been little effort to systematically compare VAWTs to the more conventional horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT). This article initiates this comparison based on prime principles, focusing on the tur...

SHM of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines— Challenges and First Solutions

The paper presents an integrated SHM-system for floater, moorings, tower, nacelle and rotor blades. Its core is based on a multivariate SHM-system for rotor blades with three different measuring techniques accompanied by appropriate signal processing approaches:  Acoustic Emission (AE) is used for identification of relative small damages at the whole blade, e.g. bursts of fibres, cracks of bon...

On the Modeling of Spar-type Floating Offshore Wind Turbines

In this paper an overview about floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) including operating conditions, property and applicability of the barge, tension-leg, and spar floating platforms is described. The spar-floating offshore wind turbines (S-FOWT) have advantages in deepwater and their preliminary design, numerical modeling tools and integrated modeling are reviewed. Important conclusions abou...
